The Jump Jockeys Championship - Who wins it?

Updated: Oct 28, 2022

It's quite a simple question really, who's going to win this years Jump Jockeys Championship?

We have the current champ Brian Hughes sitting pretty at the top, Harry Skelton who's mounted a brilliant charge to get involved and the youngest amongst them in Harry Cobden who sits in third.

Hughes has been banging in the winners left, right and centre again this year and looks the obvious favourite to retain his crown unless Skelton or Cobden can close the gap down quickly.

Skelton has been making up ground over the last few weeks with his brother Dan having the horses in flying form but his lack of outside rides could hinder his chances of catching Hughes at the top.

Cobden has the Paul Nicholls powerhouse supporting him in his bid to be champion for the first time and if Colin Tizzard's horses had been firing a bit more he would be a whole lot closer to the leader.

Brian Hughes has always made use of his good contacts in the north and his ability to pick up big spare rides here and there because he is an excellent jockey allows him to build up the winners.

Donald McCain supports Hughes alongside other trainers such as Brian Ellison and from my point of view, I think this gives him an edge over the other two, simply because both trainers always hit form when he needs it.

Hughes was brilliant last year when he won his first jockey's championship and it doesn't look like he's in any hurry to give it up.

One man who's had another superb season has been Paddy Brennan who has put his partnership with Fergal O'Brien to excellent use with 69 winners and a 19% strike rate.

Former champ Richard Johnson hasn't had the best of seasons and only sits on 66 winners, but he's still shown his sheer class many times this year with some fascinating Johnson masterclasses.

David Bass is another jockey who's been on fire with his boss Kim Bailey having the horses in red hot form which even saw First Flow win the Grade One Clarence House Chase at Ascot.

So who's going to win it then?

I'd love to see one of the Harry's win it, but Brian Hughes for me, should end the season a two time champion jockey.
