Super League Grand Final winner Morgan Knowles: 'The team we've got now is pretty special'

Updated: Oct 19, 2022

Super League Grand Final winner Morgan Knowles says the side that St Helens currently have at the moment is a special group of players after they managed to make it back-to-back Grand Final wins.

The 24 year-old loose forward from Ulverston, who was also crowned the St Helens player of the season by their coach Kristian Woolf, believes the current squad has the potential to challenge again next season with the ambition being to make it three Grand Final wins in a row.

Speaking about the team Knowles said: "I think as a group the team we've got now is pretty special.

"Teams like this don't come around too often so we want to go and capitalise on it next year the best we can because this group won't be around forever."

Speaking about how important the more senior players in the team have been, such as the retiring James Graham, Knowles said: "He's a legend of the game and a legend of the club.

"I've learnt lots of stuff off him, probably more on the mental side of the game and how he approaches training and his attitude to things and it has definitely rubbed off on a few of the lads in the team."

St Helens won last week's Grand Final 8-4 against the Wigan Warriors with a try by Jack Welsby in the final play of the game and Knowles spoke about what he remembered about those final moments.

Knowles said: "The whole ending was just such a blur.

"When Wigan had the penalty goal, between that and Jack scoring it felt as though there was like five or six minutes in between them but I've seen a few highlights on how close they were together and it's weird how it felt like time slowed down towards the end.

"I still don't think that it has properly sunk in yet though and I haven't had a chance to watch the game back yet but we spoke about it at the start of the season where good teams win Grand Finals but great teams back it up."

The Cumbrian then also spoke about how influential their captain James Roby is and the impact he has on the side.

Knowles said: "He's the best is Robes.

"There's not enough words that I can use to describe him and he'll probably go down in history as one of the best.

"Some points in the game you'll be in a tough set and you just look round and Robes is there not even out of breath so, he just makes you feel comfortable and makes you want to do well."

The next Super League season starts in March 2021 where Knowles and St Helens will be looking to defend their crown and equal the Leeds Rhinos record of three Grand Final wins in a row.
