Grand National Preview

Updated: Oct 28, 2022

Here's the runner by runner breakdown of the Grand National and I won't waste anytime so let's look at each horse and try and work out the winner!

Also to make it easier and simpler, if I think the horse has a chance it will say yay, if I think it doesn't it will say neigh, or else we could be here all day.

1 Bristol De Mai

Trainer: Nigel Twiston-Davies

Jockey: Daryl Jacob

This grey has been a brilliant horse for Daryl Jacob and he jumps bold and is a strong stayer so definitely warrants respect here. Yay.

2 Chris's Dream

Trainer: Henry De Bromhead

Jockey: Darragh O'Keeffe

Showed signs of ability last season, but done nothing so far this term and looks up against it here. Neigh.

3 Yala Enki

Trainer: Paul Nicholls

Jockey: Bryony Frost

Strong stayer and always gives his running, but fell on his only start over these fences so jumping is a concern. Neigh.

4 Ballyoptic

Trainer: Nigel Twiston-Davies

Jockey: Sam Twiston-Davies

Good horse on his day, clearly isn't the same now though and will struggle in this contest. Neigh.

5 Definitely Red

Trainer: Brian Ellison

Jockey: Henry Brooke

Will be a firm Liverpool favourite but would need to produce the best run of his career to date in order to win this. Neigh.

6 Lake View Lad

Trainer: Neil Alexander

Jockey: Brian Hughes

Won a Grade 2 this term round the track, has plenty on his plate here though and would need to put the last two dissapointing runs behind him. Neigh.

7 Burrows Saint

Trainer: Willie Mullins

Jockey: Patrick Mullins

Strong chance, has had this race in mind for a while now and has shown encouraging signs this season with a good run last time out. Yay.

8 Magic Of Light

Trainer: Jessica Harrington

Jockey: Robbie Power

Loves this race, and she's bound to be competitive here once more. Yay.

9 Acapella Bourgeois

Trainer: Willie Mullins

Jockey: Danny Mullins

Definitely has the potential to win a race like this, was good at Fairyhouse last time and has a good chance here. Yay.

10 Talkischeap

Trainer: Alan King

Jockey: Tom Cannon

Shown signs of potential when winning the bet365 Gold Cup at Sandown 2 years ago, has been lightly raced since though and clearly has risks to backing him. Neigh.

11 Tout Est Permis

Trainer: Noel Meade

Jockey: Sean Flanagan

Hasn't won in a while and no reason to believe that this could be his day. Neigh.

12 Anibale Fly

Trainer: Tony Martin

Jockey: Denis O'Regan

Has always ran well in this race, and despite age not being on his side, would be no surprise if he was to run well again. Yay.

13 Mister Malarky

Trainer: Colin Tizzard

Jockey: Jonjo O'Neill Jnr

Likes the trip, and will be looking to give his trainer the dream send off in his last National. Yay.

14 Kimberlite Candy

Trainer: Tom Lacey

Jockey: Richie McLernon

Brings plenty of positives to the race, can jump and also stay the trip, very dangerous. Yay.

15 Any Second Now

Trainer: Ted Walsh

Jockey: Mark Walsh

Got in off a low weight, trainer won this back in 2000 and will be sure to go close again with this horse. Yay.

16 Balko Des Flos

Trainer: Henry De Bromhead

Jockey: Aidan Coleman

Shown no form as of late but was classy back on his day, just a shame this now looks out of his reach. Neigh.

17 Alpha Des Obeaux

Trainer: Denise Foster

Jockey: Jody McGarvey

Another who's shown nothing of late and looks as though his best days are behind him now. Neigh.

18 Ok Corral

Trainer: Nicky Henderson

Jockey: Derek O'Connor

Finished lame on last start which is a major concern, lightly raced and has shown form in the past and could still spark a revival here. Yay.

19 Takingrisks

Trainer: Nicky Richards

Jockey: Sean Quinlan

Grand old horse who seems to be like a fine win and just keeps getting better with age, always worth a shout in these staying races. Yay.

20 Shattered Love

Trainer: Denise Foster

Jockey: Kevin Sexton

Might not stay the trip, and that is an obvious concern in this contest. Neigh.

21 Jett

Trainer: Jessica Harrington

Jockey: Sam Waley-Cohen

Needs to take a massive step forward to have a say here. Neigh.

22 Lord Du Mensil

Trainer: Richard Hobson

Jockey: Nick Schofield

Strong stayer who will always give his all, ground might not be at his optimum but a danger nonetheless. Yay.

23 Potters Corner

Trainer: Christian Williams

Jockey: Jack Tudor

Race will definitely suit him and despite not being at his best this season, should go close here. Yay.

24 Class Conti

Trainer: Willie Mullins

Jockey: Brian Hayes

Should stay fine but concern would be whether conditions suit. Neigh.

25 Milan Native

Trainer: Denise Foster

Jockey: Jamie Codd

Needs to turn the tables on what has been a poor season so far, if he wants to win this. Neigh.

26 Discorma

Trainer: Paul Nolan

Jockey: Brian Cooper

Solid horse who looks as though he'll relish this stamina test and should go well here. Yay.

27 Vieux Lion Rouge

Trainer: David Pipe

Jockey: Connor O'Farrell

Loves the jumping aspect to this race, just might not stay the distance. Yay.

28 Cloth Cap

Trainer: Jonjo O'Neill

Jockey: Tom Scudamore

The big favourite coming into the race after an impressive season to date, loads to like about this horse and will take all the beating on the day. Yay.

29 Cabaret Queen

Trainer: Willie Mullins

Jockey: Sean O'Keeffe

Won some good races in the past but looks out of form now though. Neigh.

30 Minellacelebration

Trainer: Katy Price

Jockey: Ben Poste

Won two races this season before seemingly falling apart on his last three starts. Still remains with potential though and if taking to the fences then could run a big race at a big price. Yay.

31 Canelo

Trainer: Alan King

Jockey: Tom Bellamy

Done well this season, might not stay the trip though. Neigh.

32 The Long Mile

Trainer: Philip Dempsey

Jockey: Luke Dempsey

Will definitely stay the distance and has improved a lot this season so warrants respect. Yay.

33 Give Me a Copper

Trainer: Paul Nicholls

Jockey: Harry Cobden

Not been the most reliable sort and has plenty on his plate to handle here. Neigh.

34 Farclas

Trainer: Denise Foster

Jockey: Jack Kennedy

Lacks experience but yard are in flying form so cannot be ruled out. Yay.

35 Minella Times

Trainer: Henry De Bromhead

Jockey: Rachel Blackmore

Jockey has been having a flying season, not sure the horse will get the trip but with the form of this jockey/trainer partnership, he's impossible to rule out. Yay.

36 Sub Lieutenant

Trainer: Georgie Howell

Jockey: Tabitha Worsley

Has ran well on both starts this season despite being at a big price, should run his race again but I don't think it will be enough. Neigh.

37 Hogan's Height

Trainer: Jamie Snowden

Jockey: Gavin Sheehan

Will like the fences but might not stay. Neigh.

38 Double Shuffle

Trainer: Tom George

Jockey: Jonathan Burke

Clearly talented, but another horse with stamina doubts here. Neigh.

39 Ami Desbois

Trainer: Graeme McPherson

Jockey: Kielan Woods

Will stay and always gives a good account of himself. Yay.

40 Blaklion

Trainer: Dan Skelton

Jockey: Harry Skelton

Always looked that one day he would win this race, time is ticking now though and his chance may have gone. Neigh

My Selection: A difficult race for anyone to try and find a winner in but I think Cloth Cap will be your winner here. I always love watching Lord Du Mensil and Bristol De Mai run though and there's plenty of each-way value with them two and Anibale Fly is clearly a fan of the race so can't be ruled out. Cloth Cap has been brilliant this season though and there's no negatives visible with him so I think he's got your winner written all over him.
