Coronavirus, how is it impacting sport?

Updated: Oct 28, 2022

First of all, a warm welcome into this first post on the blog and I hope it proves an interesting read and that you will return for more in the future!

The aim of this blog is to allow me to explore all the different things that is going on in our sporting world both past and present and for the first blog, it's all about the current situation in which our sporting world lives in.

In a time where they appears to be a lack clarity on where the country goes from this point after the outbreak, we all know fine well that our beloved sports will soon be returning back to our screens in no time. But how will it return? The most clear cut idea appears to be, especially in terms of the Premier League, that the remainder of the season is played behind closed doors so that we do get some outcome to the season.

This obviously allows for Liverpool to go on and collect the Premier League trophy which they have so rightly deserved this season with what has been nothing short of a unbelievable campaign for the "reds". But what about the other English Football Leagues?

The situation isn't as straight forward for the other leagues unfortunately. The Championship sit in a position where a resumption of fixtures behind closed doors like the league above them will probably be fine, but for League 1 and League 2 and even the National League, financial factors definitely come into play.

Most of these clubs require the income from supporters on match days to help keep the club a float and without this we could see clubs fail to resume once all measures for sport in the country are lifted.

The promotion and relegation aspect is a whole different ball game and I will talk about this in another blog with a in depth look to National League leaders Barrow AFC and what the full situation could mean for them going forward.

Other sports could be seen as being in a much more fortunate position because most aren't nearing the end of their seasons.

F1 and Rugby League are just some examples of sports which haven't even really got going in terms of their calendars yet so despite all sports having this overhanging financial problem, at least they don't have to sort out promotion and relegation dilemmas!

So fear not sport is back on its way! In the upcoming weeks we will definitely be seeing more of a plan going forward for a resumption of sporting events again and instead of being sat at home having to watch the FIFA Premier League tournament, the real thing itself could be back.

In the next blog I will be looking more into sporting fixtures such as the Cheltenham Festival and the impact that it could've had on this whole coronavirus outbreak and also how it could impact the sport going forward.

See you in the next one!

Elliot
