Cartmel races preview - Voice Of Calm is the way to go.

Updated: Oct 28, 2022

Cartmel's back this weekend with a crowd, and even though I won't be there, it'll be great to see the track have spectators again.

The first race of the day is sponsored by one of the main reasons we love Cartmel for and that's the sticky toffee pudding.

It's tradition that the winning trainer always gets sticky toffee pudding to take home with them, and that's why everyone wants a winner at Cartmel for!

So without anymore delay, let's see if I can find a few winners for you.

Race one is a Novices' Hurdle, and there's three horses in with a chance here.

The Irish raider from the Noel Kelly yard Gladiatorial should go to post as favourite under the ride of talented young jockey James Bowen.

It took this horse a long time to get his head in front, but last time out it was the first time he had stepped up to today's trip of 2m 6f over the smaller obstacles and he won the race in convincing fashion and should be dangerous again here if showing up in the same form.

Local trainer James Moffatt runs One Fine Man in the race hoping to get his Cartmel campaign off to a winning start at the first attempt.

This horse was travelling well in handicap company at Wetherby last time out before falling three out and remains with potential here if that fall hasn't had an affect on him.

My selection here though is Geromino for the deadly Hughes-McCain partnership who always have winners at these meetings.

Geromino failed to land the odds at Sedgefield last time, but a step up in trip seems to be what he was crying out for and I think with the form figures he brings to the race after he bumped into a useful rival the time before that at Hexham of the Skelton's, he would be stupid to ignore here.

The second race is one of them lovely Handicap Hurdle races where all seven horses have a chance to win.

I really like Voice of Calm here though because there's plenty of form to her win at Warwick in April and her opening mark of 113 allows her a chance here to make it another win.

The horse that finished second to her that day Raffle Ticket, beat a horse of Nicky Henderson's at the start of the month by 41 lengths, and that horse Hurling Magic has since gone on to win and been given a rating of 123 in the process.

That means Voice Of Calm should have more than enough in hand here to win this, and she's my selection of the day as well with that very useful bit of form behind her.

Race three is a Handicap Chase, and I watched Going Mobile run at Uttoxeter last time out over 2m 6f, and you could see that his best work is still going to be done over these longer distances of 3m+.

At a current price of 10/1 he's got great each way value to him in another open race, and the best thing to do in this race would be to watch where the money goes.

Race four is a Beginners Chase, and Fugitives Drift for Nicky Henderson is my selection here.

This horse clearly has a lot of ability based on his hurdling form and if taking to the larger obstacles, he could prove very hard to stop.

Beach Break could be the danger alongside Black Kraken and Thatsy ran well over fences in Ireland last time so it makes for yet another interesting contest.

Another Handicap Chase in up next so I'll keep my selection short and simple again for this one.

Mah Mate Bob has won over fences three times in the past and has put in two solid efforts so far this season and at a current price of 12/1, has great each-way value to it.

Race six is a Handicap Hurdle, and it's interesting to see Daryl Jacob make his way up for his only mount of the day in this race here.

He rides Coup De Pinceau for the Nick Mitchell yard and in yet another open race, this horse has each-way value and also has a jockey on board who is only coming up for one mount so, signs suggest the horse could run a big race.

The final race of the card is a Handicap Hurdle, and I think James Moffatt will get his winner for the day here with Jelski.

This horse ran a promising race at Hexham last time out and with the handicapper dropping him another 4lbs, he looks ready to strike here off a good mark.

So that marks the end to Saturday's selections, I'll be back on Sunday with my selections ahead of Monday's meeting and will also be back with a review to see how all these horses got on, until then, stay safe and stay lucky.
