Burrows Babblings Part 25 - World Cup successes, fantastic Frodon, and a quieter weekend

Updated: Feb 1, 2023

Hello, and welcome to the weekly blog piece, as always.

I hope you've had a great week since I spoke to you last, I hope you enjoyed my piece that came out on Friday where at the start of 2022 I made the journey up the coast to interview and run with the marathon man and produced a short piece for one of my radio assignments back in the second year of my course.

I still say what Gary is doing is phenomenal, and he really is an inspiration for people to get out and be active, but he is so down to earth, and you can see that in every interview he does.

His fundraising effort is very important though, and it would be great if he could reach that target of £1 million comes the end of the year.

If you haven't already listened to the piece, fear not, you can still listen here...

My running has been on the quiet side as of late, but I managed to get out for an eight mile one yesterday and will make sure I'm putting the hard yards back in again this week to keep on top before Christmas.

I spent all of Saturday though keeping an eye on the sporting action for you, especially watching Frodon's great performance at Wincanton, before spending Sunday on a visit to the Christmas markets at Holker, yes, it is that time already.

Although I will add it is my birthday coming up before then so, 21 already, time does just go I'll tell you that.

Moving on to the sporting action then, and it's been a great weekend for England in all the World Cups hasn't it?

We started on Saturday morning where England's women progressed to the final of the rugby union World Cup with a 26-19 win over Canada.

After leading 15-12 at half-time, they went on to seal the victory, partly thanks to a magnificent try from Abby Dow in the second half, and set up a place in Saturday's final, but who would they be facing?

Well, the Red Roses will face the Black Ferns, New Zealand, after they beat France in a thrilling 25-24 win, and it should be a great game on Saturday, make sure you set those alarms for the 6:30am kick-off and hopefully witness a World Cup win.

Sticking with union it wasn't to be for Fylde on Saturday afternoon, as they lost 30-20 to Sedgley.

Both sides went into the game with the perfect eight wins from eight, meaning someone's record had to go, and the game was finely poised at one point with the scores level at 20-20.

However, a penalty kick and a converted try in the last 15 minutes meant Sedgley came away with the victory, and moved above Fylde in the table in the process.

Both sides are now level on points at the top now though, and Fylde take on Huddersfield this weekend, with Sedgley also at home to Tynedale, and it's still a fascinating contest which seems to be unravelling at the top.

Preston Grasshoppers fell to a close 17-12 defeat away at Tynedale on Saturday, and take on Harrogate away this weekend looking to get back to winning ways.

Time to move over to the other code now, and back to some World Cup action, with the rugby league one really starting to hot up now.

The men's side breezed past Papa New Guinea, Tommy Makinson scoring five tries, but before that the women were equally as impressive when they beat Canada.

They'll have the chance to make that three from three against Papa New Guinea on Wednesday evening, and set themselves up for a semi-final clash as well.

For the men they'll take on Samoa on Saturday afternoon, a side they beat convincingly in the group stages, but one Sam Tomkins has said have improved since then.

We now take the usual break in the blog to provide you with my ten big sporting moments from the week gone by, plenty of variety in here as always, and plenty of success as well, especially in the World Cup's...

Ells Ten

1. Rugby League - England men are through to the World Cup semi-finals and will play Samoa, after beating Papa New Guinea in the quarters.

2. Rugby Union - England women have progressed to the Final of the rugby union World Cup after their win over Canada.

3. Rugby League - England's women have made the perfect start to the rugby league World Cup, making it two wins from two after beating Canada at the weekend.

4. Horse Racing - Flightline wins the Breeders' Cup in America.

5. Football - Southampton have sacked manager Ralph Hasenhuttl after their 4-1 defeat to Newcastle.

6. Horse Racing - Frodon carries top weight and wins at Wincanton in a superb performance.

7. Rugby Union - Fylde lose their 100% win record to Sedgley in a 30-20 defeat which now sees them drop to second in the table, but still level on points with Sedgley who are now top.

8. Cricket - England's men are in the T20 semi-finals after a nervy win over Sri Lanka.

9. Running - Marathon man Gary McKee is now on his 311th consecutive marathon.

10. Snooker - Ronnie O'Sullivan beat Judd Trump 10-6 to win his fourth Champion of Champions title.

We'll jump into cricket quickly now, and it's another semi-final set up for an England team, after they beat Sri Lanka in a nervy game.

They've managed to get through though which is the important thing, and will now face India on Thursday for a chance in the final.

To football, and just now as I am writing well typing this, Liverpool have drawn Real Madrid in the last 16 of the Champions League.

Liverpool looked improved against Tottenham at the weekend, with Salah back to his best, and this is obviously a renewal of last season's final, which Liverpool did lose 1-0, but I've started to like what I've been seeing from them again as of late, and I really wouldn't write them off at all here.

Manchester City have drawn RB Leipzig, Tottenham will play AC Milan, and Chelsea also have German opposition in Borussia Dortmund, here's hoping we can get a few teams into the last eight.

The Premier League really is interesting though at the minute, the battle at the top is between Arsenal and Manchester City but we have the likes of Newcastle and Brighton performing excellently in behind to challenge for the top four.

It's equally as close down the bottom and I'll be taking a look at it all more in depth shortly when I get chance, but all I'll say is the less said about Wolves the better.

That's it again for this quick round-up blog of everything that has been happening, and I'll see you as usual in the next one.
