Burrows Babblings Part 24 - More running, Fylde win again, and a day at the races

Updated: Feb 1, 2023

Welcome back to the blog piece again, I hope you all had a fantastic weekend and have so far had a good Halloween, rest assured, there's nothing in this blog piece that will give you a fright, although I'm sure Jamie Moore had his on Saturday afternoon when he gave Goshen a spin out over fences!

Anyways it's been another busy week of sport, plenty going on from your darts to your Formula One, so let's not wait around as always and get into the round-up.

On Friday I managed to record another personal best running, this time smashing my half marathon time.

I only went out to run for an hour, but felt so comfortable I just kept on going and going, until I reached the half marathon distance.

Like I said last week, I only ever really compete against myself when running because I just do it for the enjoyment and to help clear my head and that's what happens every time I put on my running shoes.

Into the sporting action though, we saw England rugby league make it three wins from three with an easy win you could say over Greece.

They now play in the quarter-finals this Saturday, but my attention has turned away from that, because tomorrow the women kick off their world cup campaign against Brazil.

It'll be a fantastic occasion, and you can watch it on BBC at 2:30pm and I think it would be great to see as many people as possible watch and support it.

Sticking with rugby league it was great also to see the PDRL England team beat New Zealand in their world cup final to make it England's first trophy of the tournament, and they did it in impressive fashion as well with a 42-10 victory.

I'll now head over to the other code as always, where I spent my week producing the programme piece below for the Fylde game.

Fylde themselves made it the perfect eight wins from eight, the match report you can read here: Fylde lose two to the bin, but still win with ease – Fylde Rugby Club, with another strong performance which sets them up perfectly for this weekend's trip to Sedgley.

Sedgley are also unbeaten in the league, and sit three points behind Fylde in second, and beat Fylde both home and away last season, so they'll be looking to get revenge on Sedgley, and keep their place at the top of the table.

Preston Grasshoppers suffered a home defeat to Chester, and now face a trip to Tynedale this weekend, they still sit 11th in the table.

A break as always now in the action, to give you my 10 bits of sporting action that you may have missed out on in the week gone by, it's all down here below...

Ells Ten

1. Rugby League - England women kick off their Rugby League World Cup tomorrow at 2:30pm against Brazil.

2. Rugby Union - England women have progressed to the semi-finals of the rugby union World Cup after their impressive win over South Africa.

3. Rugby League - England's PDRL team have won the Rugby League World Cup, beating New Zealand 42-10 in the final.

4. Horse Racing - Bravemansgame trounces his rivals in the Charlie Hall Chase.

5. Football - Arsenal stay top of the Premier League with an impressive 5-0 win over Nottingham Forest.

6. Horse Racing - Beauport wins the Colin Parker Memorial Chase at Carlisle for jockey Jordan Nailor and trainer Nigel Twiston-Davies.

7. Rugby Union - Fylde make it eight out of eight with another win over Tynedale, Preston Grasshoppers lost at home to Chester.

8. Formula One - Max Verstappen wins the Mexico Grand Prix.

9. Running - Marathon man Gary McKee appeared on BBC Breakfast today, and has now ran his 304 consecutive marathon.

10. Darts - Beau Greaves beats Fallon Sherrock to secure her place at the PDC World Championships.

Break over, now into horse racing, and we had excellent cards at Wetherby on Friday and Saturday, which saw Harry Skelton ride a treble on Saturday, but all the talk was about the other Harry in Harry Cobden, who steered Bravemansgame to a convincing victory in the Charlie Hall, which puts him firmly on track for a tilt at the King George at Kempton.

He was one of my horses to follow for the season, and he jumped impeccably on the whole, and won with ease, a performance which showed just how good he is.

The horse which I took out of Friday's card was Into Overdrive trained by Mark Walford and ridden by Jamie Hamilton.

This horse jumped beautifully throughout, despite making an error at the last which was just because he was still full of running, and it'll be really interesting to see where he goes next now.

Yesterday I was at Carlisle races for a fantastic day of racing which saw Beauport take the big listed race of the day with a strong performance, which saw him dig deep and battle on hard to the line to hold off the late challenge from Millers Bank.

Let's take a look at my selections for the card, and see how I got on.

12:50pm - Win: Grove Road Dangers: Regarde, The King of Ryhope - Winner and 2nd.

1:25pm - Win/EW: Viva Lavilla Dangers: Iron Bridge, Donny Boy. - 4th place and winner.

1:58pm - Win: Wor Verge EW: Lovely Moon. Winner and unplaced.

2:30pm - Win: Corach Rambler Dangers: Minella Drama, Beauport. - Unplaced and winner.

3:05pm - Win: Good Risk at All EW: Romeo Brown. - Winner and unplaced.

3:40pm - Win: Houston Texas Dangers: Seven No Trumps, Morning Spirit. - Winner and unplaced.

4:13pm - Win: Blue Ridge Hill Danger: Fuji Rocks, Benny Silver. - 2nd place.

Not bad at all in the end then, I would say a good enough day at the office.

My final bit to round off this blog is to cover the football quickly, Barrow are playing really well alongside Carlisle in League Two, Wolves are struggling in the Premier League, and Arsenal are looking like they could win it more and more each week, a real interesting season shaping up as we head into the world cup.

Thanks for taking your time to read this blog piece as always, I might have a piece out for you towards the end of the week, so make sure you keep your eyes open for that, and also if you haven't already go over and check out the marathon man, he's getting closer and closer to his goal and it is such a great journey to watch.

Have a good week, I'll catch you soon!
