Burrows Babblings Part 23 - Fylde down 'Dale', I run a PB 10K, and the World Cups are heating up

Updated: Feb 1, 2023

Another week gone by already, and plenty more action to update you all on, welcome back to my weekly blog piece of Burrow's Babblings, which includes its usual format of talking about as much sport as possible, as quickly as possible, and also giving you the Ells Ten later on.

I'll start this week's blog piece off by going over the thing which I considered the biggest sporting event by far at the weekend, the Millom Striders 10k Halloween run.

Now I'll make clear that a few years ago running wasn't exactly my strong point to say the least, but I got the bug for it, and even purchased some new running trainers ahead of the race!

For me running has always acted as something way more than just something you do to keep fit, which of course is a positive, but it gives you a release, an outlet to get away from work or whatever it may be, and quite simply just run.

Onto the race itself anyways, I was worried that I would set off too fast and not be able to make it back, but after the first two miles I was up and running, and that fear had slowly gone.

In typical Cumbrian weather it was raining, although its companion wind wasn't anywhere to be seen which was unusual, and as I powered on through miles three, four and five, accompanied by the sister's boyfriend Abe, we both had our eyes firmly set on personal bests.

The final mile was a tough one, but a strong sprint finish saw me come in an official time of 47:20, on Strava it was a PB of 46:52, one in which I of course took.

An overall finish of 22nd was also pleasing, even though I'll have to improve massively if I ever wanted to get anywhere the leaders who ran it in 35 minutes, one day maybe, one day...

Onto some of the other sport that took place over the weekend, and we had an excellent renewal of the Old Roan at Aintree on Sunday.

Riders Onthe Storm travelled really well throughout the race and was produced superbly by the champion jockey Brian Hughes going down to two out, before hanging on up the run in to prevail by a head from a late charge by Hitman.

In the rugby union England women were again successful with a 75-0 win over South Africa, which has seen them set up a quarter-final game against Australia on Sunday.

Wales also progressed to the last eight where they'll meet New Zealand on Saturday morning, a side which beat Scotland 57-0 in the weekend just gone.

Fylde also made it seven from seven in the National League Division Two North, with a clinical and controlled win over Wharfedale at The Woodlands, a match report which you can view through the link here: Fylde down ‘Dale with clinical display – Fylde Rugby Club.

It was another good performance from the side who managed to keep Wharfedale out from scoring any tries and scored plenty of their own to keep top spot in the league table.

Meanwhile Preston Grasshoppers fell to a 28-15 away defeat to Otley and they currently sit 11th in league.

Grasshoppers are at home this weekend as they take on Chester, and Fylde are at home again as well as they welcome Tynedale.

A break now, as usual, to give you the weekly feature bit, my top ten sporting moments from the week gone by...

Ells Ten

1. Rugby Union - England women progress to the quarter-finals of the World Cup with a 75-0 thrashing of South Africa, Wales also make it through to take on New Zealand.

2. Rugby League - England men beat France 48-12 to all but secure their place in the knock-out stages of the Rugby League World Cup.

3. Cricket - Barrow's Liam Livingstone hit an unbeaten 29, as England kicked off their T20 World Cup campaign with a comfortable five wicket win over Afghanistan.

4. Football - Arsenal drop points at the top of the Premier League in a 1-1 draw with Southampton.

5. Horse Racing - Riders Onthe Storm wins the Old Roan Chase at Aintree by a head over Hitman.

6. Rugby Union - Fylde still sit pretty at the top of the table, after their seventh win in a row against Wharfedale at home, Preston Grasshoppers fell to defeat against Otley though.

7. Formula One - Max Verstappen wins the US Grand Prix, with Lewis Hamilton back in second.

8. Football - England's Lionesses' have found out they will face Denmark and China and the team that wins the play-offs from either Chile, Haiti or Senegal at the World Cup next year.

9. Golf - Rory McIlroy has returned to the top of the world rankings.

10. Football - Middlesbrough have appointed former Manchester United player Michael Carrick as their new head coach.

As mentioned in the ten there England men are on course for the knock-out stages in the rugby league, and they'll take on Greece this Saturday looking to make it the perfect three from three so far.

Ireland were dealt a blow to their qualifying when they were beaten by Lebanon on Sunday, and they now need to beat New Zealand if they want to progress, while Scotland are also all but out after losing heavily to Australia.

Wales also have an important match this evening against Tonga, which they will also need to win if they want to have any chance of qualifying for the next stage.

The cricket also picked up a comfortable win over Afghanistan to kick of their World Cup challenge, and that's you all up to date I think with all the sport that has gone on this weekend and in the past week.

As always, all support to this blog page is much appreciated, and I enjoy producing them, and you all enjoy reading them, so let's keep that going shall we?

I'm off now to prepare to referee my Women's World Cup Friendly tomorrow at Orrell between Canada and Ireland, but I will be up at Carlisle on Sunday for their horse racing fixture which sees the feature the Colin Parker Chase take place, so once the declarations are out, I will have a preview piece on that for you as well, so I'll see you in that piece won't I?
