Aintree Day One Review - It's Fergie Time!

Updated: Oct 28, 2022

Sir Alex Ferguson is well known for his unbelievable successes in the football world, but on the first day of the Aintree Festival he was reigning supreme with some of the horses he owned as he won the first three races.

He's used to being dominant in Liverpool through his football managing days, and in racing he carried all of that over.

Protektorat won the Grade One Novice Chase for the Skeltons' with Hitman in third, before Monmiral proved why he was the banker of the first day with an effortless victory in the Grade One Hurdle.

Clans Des Obeaux made it a hat-trick for Ferguson with a comprehensive victory of the Betfair Bowl, my selection Clondaw Castle finishing a distant second, and Tiger Roll coming home in 4th in his own time.

The Aintree Hurdle went the way of the Irish with Abacadabras who fought of an effort off Buveur D'air who eventually tired into fourth, before Cousin Pascal won the Foxhunters Chase over the National fences at a big price of 66/1.

Editeur Du Gite won the handicap chase for Josh and Gary Moore, before Rachel Blackmore ended on a high after what had been a tough day's racing for her, when she won the bumper aboard Me Too Please.

Day one was good, let's hope day two can be even better!
